Final Stats

Omaha, Neb. - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team came up short today in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament against top seed Indiana State, 4-0. The Panthers finish the season 14-9, while No. 75 Indiana State improves 12-6.

 

The match was originally slated to start at 11 a.m., but was moved to 2 p.m. because the match was scheduled to be played outside at the Koch Family Tennis Center. Due to inclement weather the match was finished indoors at the Hanscom Tennis Center.

 

The Sycamores started the match strong winning both doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead over the Pantherse. Indiana State's Jennifer Migan and Joanne Schickerling teamed up for an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles over UNI's freshman Diana Mendez and sophomore Sampada Kanade, and Fadzai Masiyazi and Sarah Meghoufel held off senior Carolina Hannes and freshman Laia Gonzalez-Garrido, 8-5 in No. 3 doubles.


 

 

 

In singles play, the Sycamores won the first three doubles matches that were completed to secure the team victory. Joanne Schikerling topped Laia Gonzalez-Garrido, 6-4, 6-3 in No. 3 singles, and Fadzai Masiyazi rolled past Diana Mendez, 6-0, 6-4.

 

Hannes, the Panthers all-time wins leader, was leading in her No. 6 singles over Marie Caujolle, 7-5, 3-2 before the match was stopped because the outcome of the match had already been determined. Hannes finishes her Panther career with a school record 86 career victories, and senior Meghana Paritala finishes her career in a tie for second with 84 career wins.

 

The Panthers will return four of its top six players for next year from a squad that finished fourth in the MVC.
